THE Isle of Wight Synchronised Skating Club took four teams to Sheffield to compete in the prestigious Britannia Cup — and they never let their high standards slide, winning medals and creating new British champions.
The Islanders — who incredibly have to do all their training off-Island — were at the Ice Sheffield Arena over two days competing in the event that decides British champions in each of British Ice Skating’s synchronised categories.

First to compete was the adult Wight Diamonds team, formed this season.
They had a clean skate and looked confident and classy — covering the ice with aplomb to a Take That compilation, achieving their best score this season (25.51), a massive five-point improvement on their previous competitive mark, which placed them sixth from 12.
Juvenile team, the Wight Sequins, skated with great enthusiasm and confidence to their Village People-inspired routine, which gained them 26.39 points — nine ahead of the competition to earn the title of Juvenile British Champions 2022.
British Ice Skating TV were not only impressed by their skating skills and performance. They also loved their costumes, made by one of the skater’s mums.
The Sequins’ title was well deserved having shown great quality all season, winning gold at all three of the events they competed in.
Next to skate was the Junior B team, the Wight Crystals, who skated a fast-paced routine to Me and My Girls, by Selena Gomez.
Wearing eye-catching purple costumes, they kept up the energy throughout their exciting programme — scored 54.16 points, their PB score this seson, which earned them the Junior B British title.
Incredibly, the team had only scored 38.36 in their previous event in early March. Their championship winning score beat the competition by more than ten points.
Meanwhile, the Senior B team, the Wight Jewels — who only made the decision to compete this season in December last year — were competing in only their second competition together.
Performing a Samba-inspired routine, gave it their all and, despite a collision, just before a very difficult lift element, which cost them two points, to score 50.96. Without it, they would have taken silver.
