TOP Island runner Henry McLuckie completed his winter racing schedule in style by winning the Podium 1 Mile Road Race, held in Barrowford, Lancashire.
PODIUM ONE-MILE
Running for his sponsor, Team Adidas, Henry tactically bided his time for the first few hundred meters of the race but, realising this was not to his advantage, he quickly changed tack and moved to the front of the field to lift the pace.
This soon split the field, with internationals Archie Davis, an 800m specialist, and Zak Sedden, last year’s top UK 3,000m steeplechaser, in pursuit.
Henry’s pace and endurance strength comfortably gave him an excellent victory, in a time of 4mins 3secs.
He will now continue his studies at St Mary’s University in London, while he and Ryde-based coach, Geoff Watkin, plan his next training schedule and altitude trip to Flagstaff, Arizona.
INTER-COUNTIES 20 MILE RACE
RYDE Harriers athletes Charlie Metcalfe and Holly Newton were part of the winning Hampshire team at the Inter-Counties 20 Mile Road Championships, staged at Debden Airfield, near Saffron Walden, Essex.
As part of a four-strong team, Charlie was soon into her stride, tagged onto a group of men, which assisted her with her pacing on the flat-lapped course.
Holly had set off at a slightly slower pace than Charlie in her first 20-mile event.
Charlie, who showed superb endurance, held her form to finish an excellent fifth overall in the women’s category, in a fast time of 2hrs 7mins 44secs, which also saw her claiming the award for winning the 45-49 age group.
Holly ran a solid race, finishing an outstanding ninth in 2.14.03.
The Islanders were supported by Elli Monks (second) and Valeria Sesto (11th).
When the final results were calculated, Hampshire comfortably won the county event.
