COWES Sports moved into fourth in the Velocity Wessex Premier League following their crushing victory over Blackfield and Langley.
The Yachtsmen — in their highest league position in many moons — shot into an early 2-0 lead against the visitors, with goals by ex-Newport star Connor Kelly in the fifth minute, with the second from another former Port regular, Scott Barron four minutes later.
But struggling Blackfield and Langley pulled one back shortly before half-time, to give Cowes boss Max Draper something to think about during the interval.
Whatever he said to the lads certainly did the trick, with his side coming out with a real spring in their step in what turned out to be an eventful, highly entertaining second half.
Jez Conway gave Cowes a 3-1 lead and when John McKie added a fourth, there was a collective sigh of relief around Westwood Park, which allowed the Yachtsmen the chance to express themselves a little more.
Substitute Elias Ahmed added fresh legs going forward and it was he who turned the game into a rout with the fifth.
Scott McFarlane sent the blues fans home very happy with another strike to make it 6-1.
In Wessex League Division 1, East Cowes Vics — who went into their match at Downton defending a 100 per cent winning start to the season — went down 2-1 and had two men sent off.
Vics went a goal down on 24 minutes, then lost Aeden Coode, who was red carded in the first half.
After making it to the interval, Alex Smith changed things around and his side did well to get back on level terms through Jacob Reynolds on the hour mark.
But the Islanders made it more difficult for themselves when their skipper, Callum Chase, was also given his marching orders.
Vic looked like they just might steal an unlikely point against one of the early pacesetters, but Downton scored in the 89th minute to take the spoils and send Vics down to tenth spot.
Newport started to get their season up and running with a comprehensive 4-1 win against Whitchurch United at home.
A headed goal by Spike Pearce and a second from Jordan Browne put Port into a 2-0 half-time lead.
There were a few jitters when the visitors pulled one back from the spot, but Port picked themselves up again with a third hen a Joe Butcher shot cannoned back off the post and was finished off with aplomb by Browne, who gleefully smashed it in.
Butcher eventually got the goal he deserved for all his effort to cap off a great Newport performance, which hoisted them up to mid-table.
In Division 1 of the Island League, Whitecroft and Barton Sports continued their perfect start to the season with a 4-0 win over Cowes Sports Reserves, in a battle of the top two.
Notably, in Combination 2, Seaview Reserves had a day to forget — losing 19-0 at home to Bembridge A.
