All three of our Isle of Wight Wessex League clubs are in action today (Saturday, December 9), with Vics and Cowes on their travels and Port hosting mainland visitors.
Laverstock & Ford v Cowes Sports (The Dell | Kick-off: 3pm)
Premier Division’s Cowes Sports will travel to seventh place Laverstock & Ford for this afternoon's kick-off.
With Cowes currently sitting in ninth, a win today would see the Yachtsmen move above their opponents, and if results go their way, they could end the day in a playoff position.
The 2021/22 Wessex League Division 1 play-off winners, Laverstock & Ford's last outing saw them claim all three points in a 3-2 win against third-place AFC Portchester.
Meanwhile, the Yachtsmen’s last league game was an away trip to Blackfield & Langley in midweek, seeing the Islanders return home with a 4-1 victory.
AFC Aldermaston vs East Cowes Vics (Mettal Stadium | Kick-off: 3pm)
East Cowes Vics will be very confident heading into their fixture with struggling AFC Aldermaston.
Following a 4-0 win away at Fawley AFC in midweek, Vics moved to within one spot away from the play-off places but remain six points behind fifth-place Cove.
Vics have netted ten times in their last two matches and are a team in great form and a force to be reckoned with in Division 1.
Their opponents sit in 19th, with their last league game back on November 25 being a 4-1 home loss against title challengers Downton.
Interestingly, the Berkshire-based club clocked up the most number of miles on their travels in Division 1 last season.
Earlier this week, Vics were seeking a minibus driver to take the side up to AFC Aldermaston (around 45 minutes outside of Southampton). If interest, get in touch via the club’s Facebook page.
Newport vs Frimley Green (Beatrice Avenue | Kick-off: 3pm)
Newport are the only Island Wessex League side to be playing at home this weekend.
Port host 19th place Frimley Green, who sit one place below the Islanders on the same points (14) but with five additional games played.
Frimley Green lost 4-2 at home to Downton in midweek, while Port haven’t been in league action since November 25 – after last weekend’s fixture away at Romsey was postponed amid the Solent’s foggy conditions.
Newport’s last outing saw them come away empty-handed in a 2-1 loss at Totton & Eling.
