Isle of Wight football club Newport will be overwhelming favourites in tonight’s (Tuesday, February 6) Wessex League Division One fixture despite travelling away from home.

Port will face winless New Milton Town, with three points taking the Islanders to within two of Verwood Town above – and with four games in hand after this evening’s match.

In their last outing, Newport faced unbeaten title favourites Hamworthy Recreation on Saturday (February 3) and travelled home empty-handed after a 2-0 defeat.

Meanwhile, New Milton faced Island opposition in East Cowes Vics, missing out on a much-needed point following an injury-time Vics winner from Brad Young.

Port, who are in 16th, remain between five to nine matches behind the teams around them, following a litter of postponements due to weather and travel woes last year.

New Milton have lost 20 of their 22 league games this season and sit firmly rooted to the bottom of the Division One table with just two points – ten points behind the team above.

Kick-off is at 7.30pm at The DMW Glazing Stadium.

Updated

Tonight's game has been postponed.

There were fears the team could not make it back from the mainland tonight, due to the weather.

A statement from the Newport FC chairman said: "Newport are disappointed to confirm that our league game against New Milton has been cancelled this evening.

"However with no guarantee that the red jet would still be running at 10.30am with winds due to increase further, and with the last car ferry being 9pm there was a real risk of players, staff and supporters being stuck on the mainland until 4.30am tomorrow morning.

"Out of a duty of care to my club we asked for the sensible decision to be taken this time around.

"I’m sure if put in the same position travelling teams would want and expect the same considerations, and we thank New Milton for their understanding."
