Brading Town's hero goalkeeper netted the final spot kick in a tense Isle of Wight Gold Cup quarter final penalty shootout on Thursday evening (April 18).

East Cowes Vics, who are pushing for promotion into the Wessex Premier League, hosted The Romans, of the Island League's Division 1, at Beatrice Avenue.

FT | East Cowes Vics 3-3 Brading Town

(Brading win 7-8 on penalties)

Within a minute of kick-off, The Romans were in front, following a mix up in the Vics’ area where Dan VALE nipped in to finish well.

Vics equalised in the sixth minute, after a scramble in the Brading area was pounced on by Liam NEWBOLD, his shot beating Harry Mitchell in net.

Three minutes later, Vics were in front. Jake Wright’s effort was well saved, but Josh NEALE was on hand to smash the ball high into the net.

Vics were on top and effort for Charlie Marsek, Charlie Hart and Neale all failed to hit the target.

The Romans were in this game though and a great cross from Dan Vale picked out Liam BENNETT who prodded home in from of Vics’ keeper Alex Ram.

Two minutes later, Brading took the lead again, a mistake from Newbold gave BENNETT the opportunity to bag his brace.

After the break, Vics were awarded a penalty after Josh Neale brought down by Mitchell, and Jake WRIGHT stepped up and placed the spot hick high into the corner of the net.

Vics were not a different side and creating openings, but the final ball and finishing was always lacking.

With no extra time in the Gold Cup, the referee’s final whistle sent the game straight to penalties.

Brading scored their first four spot kicks and, when Vics’ missed their third, it well to Dan Vale to win it for Brading, but his effort sailed over the bar.

The theme continued until the score reached 7-7. Dalamar hit his penalty over, leaving Ted Mumford to win it, but his effort also sailed over.

With just the keepers to take, Mitchell scored, leaving Ram needing to find the net to start the rotation again, but saw his spot kick saved, after the hero Brading keeper dived to his right and pushed the effort past the post.

Brading Town progress into the semi final of the Gold Cup, and will face Newport, with dates and venues to be released soon.
