AN ISLE of Wight boxing ace took to the ring in Fareham, competing against Islington opposition.

Jack Murphy, 22, from Ryde, who is studying to be a quantity surveyor, took on 25-year-old Joseph Burton at Hill Park Workman’s Club.

The clash was a rematch, and Burton had the edge, winning on points at the last occasion.

From the first bell, Burton came out strong, scoring well to the body and setting a high work rate.

Jack came back to the corner, knowing he was a round down, and acted on instructions to make space to counter punch.

This paid dividends and turned the contest around; Jack scoring well with his back hand, which Burton struggled to find an answer to.

It set up a great final round as the crowd got behind Jack and he continued to press relentlessly, scoring well, both to head and body.

The Islander won on points, picking up the best visiting boxer award.

“It was a good win for Jack in a hard bout, and he has shown great improvements, which he has been working so hard on,” said coach, Mike Voisey.
