AN EXHILARATING battle took place between Craig Wilson and Dan Morgan to mark the second event of the Wight Tri Summer Splash and Dash Series — the Yaverland Aquathlon.
Wight Tri fielded 15 of its athletes in the event, which included a choice of a 200m or 400m swim and a 10.5km or 19km cycle.
The event was hosted by Yaverland Sailing and Boat Club, with competitors relishing a sea swim and a challenging bicycle dash towards Bembridge, before returning to Yaverland.
Liz Dunlop was the most accurate participant, finishing her long course swim and bike run in 52mins 11secs — just 11 seconds off her nominated time.
Wilson followed, just 25 seconds short of his 41-minute prediction, while Dan Morgan came third with a 35-second lead on his predicted 41 minutes.
The highlight of the competition was the fiery contest between Wilson and Morgan, with the latter emerging victorious over the long course, in an impressive 40.25, leaving Wilson to settle for second in 40.35.
Female champion, Arielle Elton-Walters, overtook Liz on the second cycling lap to finish in 51.46.
Over the short course, Roy Young and Claire Squirrell, were crowned fastest male and female, finishing in 28.45 and 30.05 respectively.
The series continues on Friday (July 26) with the Gurnard Aquathlon, hosted by Gurnard Sailing Club.
