Overcoming overwhelming odds, an Isle of Wight civil servant powered through to compete in a powerlifting national final.

Despite carrying injuries and being advised not to compete, Zoltan Mihalyi fought through the pain to compete in the A/BPU British Powerlifting Championship in Manchester on Tuesday, July 16.

Mihalyi went to the competition with the aim to secure a spot for the World Championships in November.

In the squat discipline, Mihalyi attempted an impressive 280kgs but fell short on executing the required depth on the judgement of two out of three referees.

However, he managed a personal best in the bench press with 195kgs.

His back injuries posed a concern when he started the deadlift with 250kgs.

After moving to 275kgs, his injuries saw him pull out of the lift.

Despite the hurdles, Mihalyi managed to clinch a silver medal, earning the opportunity to represent Team GB in the World Championships.

Nevertheless, his resilience saw the fruitful reward of a silver medal and the revered opportunity to represent Team GB in the World Championships.

Mihalyi said: "I know that competing with my injuries was a gamble, but I am really happy with the outcome."

Mihalyi praised Vectis Weightlifting Club and his physiotherapist, Dr Abi, from the RMA Sports Injury Clinic on the Island.

He now plans to rest and prepare for the World Championships in November.
