Despite two emails to the head of historic properties, David Bailey, regarding exiting the Osborne House site, it appears that instructions to allow the public to exit through the green gate next to the shop, have not been passed on to staff.

My wife and I are members of English Heritage and visit Osborne often. Although restrictions have been eased regarding Covid-19, myself and my wife still wear our masks when entering busy places. Entering Osborne is organised, exiting is not.

The operating regime in June was for a "member of the team being rostered in the area of the green gate next to the shop, with their main duty being to provide visitors with an opportunity to leave via the green gate rather than having to enter the shop, if they so desire."

In July, after restrictions had been eased, Mr Bailey once again stated: "if visitors wish to leave through the green gate, we will open this for them."

On August 10, as on our visit in June, we were told we must exit through the shop.

Although the standard route is to leave through the shop, we have no interest in purchasing goods, and it does not make sense to be herded through a busy thoroughfare where we have noticed most members of the public do not wear masks.

It is good to see the staff at Osborne are wearing theirs. (Mr Bailey has said English Heritage encourages visitors to wear masks.)

We have complained again and spoken to Douglas Worsley at Osborne, as Mr Bailey was not available.

Hopefully, something will now be organised, so members of the public who do not wish to leave the site via the shop are given a choice and can leave via the green gate.

We are all thankful that, hopefully, Covid-19 is on the decline, allowing us more freedom.

However, we still need to observe sensible and responsible precautions if we can, and if that means separating people out where possible, then managers of visitor attractions (especially those with a high volume of visitors passing through a confined space) should do all they can in this regard for the health and safety of all.

Finally, we note from the County Press website, that there has been a surge and a large number of confirmed Covid cases have been added to the Isle of Wight's total. This virus has not gone away.
