Much-loved mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Jill Broadhead (nee Moody) died on Sunday (January 10) at the age of 94 in her sleep in a local care home.

Apart from a few war years off the Island, Jill was a born and bred Islander.

She was a pupil at Whippingham Primary School where her aunt Madge Moody was headteacher, then to West Wing School in Ryde for her secondary schooling. Her father George Moody was chairman of the Isle of Wight County Council for a number of years and she spent a happy childhood at Heasely Manor, Arreton, where her father was a farmer.

Jill married Dr Herman Broadhead in August 1950 at St Paul’s Church, Barton. They had four children, John, Richard, Catherine and Simon, leading to ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

In 1943, Jill had travelled to Winchester for nurse pre-training then to University College Hospital in London where she completed her SRN training.

She met her husband there, and they returned to the Island where Dr Broadhead had a practice in Newport, then Ryde until his death in May 1986.

Jill worked as an out of hours receptionist for the medical practice in Newport as well as some occasional work at the family planning clinic.

Jill loved antiques and horses and was involved as a church recorder and was a keen member of NADFAS for a number of years.

She was also a volunteer for the Abbeyfield charity in Newport and Driving for the Disabled based at Osborne House.

A private memorial service will be held when restrictions allow. To make a donation in Jill’s memory, please give to Sightsavers https://www.sightsavers.org
