What an awful admission that there are more than 3,000 empty properties on the Island, including second holiday homes (CP, 16-04-21).

I have no problem with anyone investing their money in additional property — I have done so myself in the past — but such property should be lived in year round by those unable to buy, not used for two or three weeks of the year.

Holiday home owners contribute little to the economy of the Island, the main beneficiaries being the ferry companies and supermarkets.

The number of empty homes makes nonsense of our supposed house-building target figure and our planners should be doing all they can to encourage schemes for affordable homes that will help young Islanders onto the housing ladder and to discourage the schemes that keep appearing for executive homes, often on greenfield sites, which are way beyond the means of those really in need of a home.
