A CANDIDATE in the Isle of Wight Council elections has refuted claims his Porsche is not taxed or insured — and said the slur was 'politically motivated'.

Alasdair Steane drove to today's election count in the vehicle, after a complaint was made to the police yesterday by a Bembridge resident that it was untaxed and uninsured.

A check on the government website shows the 1999 car hasn't been taxed since June 2020, and the Motor Insurance Database shows it as without insurance.

However, Mr Steane said he could prove he did have tax and insurance — although declined to show the County Press the proof.

He said he had spoken to the police about the matter yesterday and all was above board.

Mr Steane said the person who told the County Press his car was on the road illegally must have been 'politically motivated' in doing so.

Isle of Wight County Press:

Mr Steane is standing for the Bembridge ward, for Our Island, against Conservative Joe Robertson.

UPDATE May 11: Mr Steane's car is now showing as being taxed on the DVLA database.
