A DRIVER and three passengers were taken to hospital after a car sped off the road and rolled into a field near Havenstreet.

Police, firefighters and ambulance were sent to the incident on Stroud Wood Road, which happened at around 10.45pm last night (Saturday).

"A grey Seat car left the carriageway and rolled, entering a nearby field. Four people received minor injuries," a spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said. 

The four injured were taken by the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service to St Mary's Hospital in Newport to be assessed, the police spokesman added.

Fire appliances from Ryde, Newport and Sandown were at the accident scene. No one was trapped in the car, so firefighters conducted scene safety drills for an hour before they were stood down.

No other vehicles were involved. 

The police closed the road between Upton roundabout and Rowlands Lane, near Havenstreet, until the area was made safe.

Police continue to investigate the accident, with no arrests made at this stage.
