Princess Olga Romanoff will be among those attending a ceremony at the Romanov monument in East Cowes today (Saturday).

A descendent of the House of Romanov - which included the former Russian Tsar and his family - she is representing the Romanov Family Association.

Soil taken from the site of the Russian Royal Family's execution will be placed at the monument on Jubilee Recreation Ground, off York Avenue.

A service will also mark the 40th Anniversary of the Canonisation of Saint Grand Duchess Elizabeth, Queen Victoria's favourite granddaughter and a regular visitor to East Cowes.

Tsar Nicholas II and his family also visited the town.

In 1909, they were among the royals who visited the Island for Cowes Week and a parade of Britain's Royal Naval fleet in the Solent.

While in town, the princesses were allowed to travel on the Floating Bridge.

The family were executed on July 17, 1918.

Saint Elizabeth, the Tsar's sister-in-law, was a regular visitor to East Cowes.

The Tsarina's other sister is buried at St Mildred's Church, Whippingham.

The East Cowes Romanov monument was unveiled on July 7, 2018. Its Moscow-based sculptor Elena Bezborodova was among those who travelled to the town for the ceremony.

Chair of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Romanov Society, Maria Harwood, the Isle of Wight's Deputy Lord Lieutenant Mrs Mary Case and East Cowes Mayor Cllr Michael Paler will be at today's service.
