A LONDON Affair is a collection of three one act plays by John Mortimer currently being staged at the Apollo Theatre in Newport — and what an evening it was!

Knightsbridge opened the show, with impressive '70s costumes and comedic flair. The play centred around the misunderstanding of Mrs Stoke’s ‘business’ after she advertises for a ‘ladies' double fronted chest’.

Martin Ward played the stoic and inquisitive Henry Bulstrode masterfully, which Holly Squires' take on Francesca Stokes contrasted with beautifully. Ginnie Orrey could not be faulted in her portrayal of Muriel — playful, sincere and unforgettable. I don’t think we have laughed that much at a stage performance before!

The second act was Lunch Hour, a play all about misunderstandings, as a secret couple spend an hour together in a hotel room. Carol Simpson’s portrayal of The Girl was transformative, as she slowly turned from frightened girl to authoritative woman.

She was supported by The Man, with a brilliantly clueless performance from David Stradling.

Cheryl May hilariously characterised The Manageress, appearing regularly to drive up the tension and hilarity.

Finally, we had Marble Arch, a play about an old film star who thinks her lover has died in her bathroom and attempts to hide the body.

This comedy of errors style production was staged masterfully, taking full use of all the entrances and exits.

Kathryn Ward, as Laura Logan, blew us away with her commanding and powerful stage presence.

Ian Moth, as McNee the cleaner, bumbled around, perfectly portraying the anxiety of the character.

Eve Cardew as Miss Parker burst on to the stage with infectious and lovable energy and Gary Smith, as Max, brought a refreshingly solid and measured energy to the production.

It was an evening of polished entertainment from the Apollo Players — a company we would expect nothing less from.

The play is running until August 7, so there may still be an opportunity to catch it.
