A RYDE man caught with cocaine after being arrested on an unrelated matter has been sentenced.

Rodney Travis, of Green Street, appeared before the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last Friday (July 30).

The 38-year-old admitted possession of cocaine, on July 4, 2021.

Prosecutor, Liz Miller, told the court police had arrested Travis shortly before 7pm on an unrelated matter.

He was found with a tinfoil wrap of white powder, which was later confirmed to be cocaine.

Ms Miller said Travis fully admitted the offence in interview, and said he had one previous conviction for possession of cocaine, for which he received a conditional discharge.

Oscar Vincent, defending, said Travis was arrested for an entirely unrelated matter, which was dealt with by way of no further action.

He said he had spent two days in the cells, which was punishment enough, and there had been a significant gap between offences.

The court heard the amount found was very small and consistent with personal use.

Travis was given a 12-month conditional discharge, had his previous one revoked, and was ordered to pay a surcharge of £22.

The presiding magistrate told Travis to get his life sorted and move away from drugs.
