The future of a closed road in Ventnor remains uncertain after more movement following Monday's torrential rainfall.

Flooding caused what Island Roads is calling the 'isolated settling' of a slipped wall, which runs along Belgrave Road.

It was the reason the road was closed in January 2020 and measures were put in place to protect streets further down the hill.

It has only been open to pedestrians since then.

Yesterday (Wednesday), Esplanade footpath, which runs underneath it, was also closed to allow for further assessment and monitoring.

Pre-works to strengthen supporting walls, ahead of a major project on the failed Belgrave Road walls, had just got underway.

Island Roads says it is now finalising its specialist construction team and plans to start the main work in late summer.

It said: "We have been working with the conservation officer and local residents as well as Ventnor Town Council to ensure that the new wall and road will meet the needs of the Ventnor community in the future.

"As the delivery phase of this project progresses, we will ensure the local and wider Island community receive regular updates over the coming months."
