TRAFFIC was heavy in Newport this afternoon, on most of the main routes in and out of the town.

The lower part of the High Street is currently closed, which means cars can't exit the High Street on to Coppins Bridge.

The Island Roads-led project, to upgrade lights and crossings at the busy Newport roundabout, paused over Christmas, but started again on Monday (January 10).

Today, people were commenting on social media that it was taking an hour to get out of the Sainsbury's supermarket car park.

Google traffic data showed the heaviest traffic at 5.15pm on the junction of Fairlee Road and Staplers, and on the dual carriageway coming into Newport.

South Street was also very busy, and the roads off Medina Avenue.
