Two antique Chinese bowls have sold for just under an incredible £200,000 at an Isle of Wight auction, after gathering interest from a host of international buyers.

From the same estate, they were sold by the Island's HRD Auction Rooms today, in Brading.

When the hammer fell, after around ten minutes of online and telephone bidding, the audience gave both the sales a round of applause.

Described as a 17cm yellow ground bowl, depicting scroll work flowers, lot 82 sold for £42,000 to an online bidder, rather than its listed price of around £200.

Bids around the £40,000 mark were made in person in the auction room.

Lot 93 was listed an old 21cm circular pot with a cover, decorative floral design and turquoise interior, sitting on a carved wooden stand.

It had a guide price of £500 but the hammer fell on a whopping £152,000.

The sale involved all six of the auction house's phone lines, two phone bidders (represented by HRD staff), and a further two people on telephones, bidding via a person who attended the sale.

The items were among a number of other Asian ceramics, from the same estate, snapped up at the Antique & Modern One Day Auction

Auctioneer Warren Riches told the Isle of Wight County Press, "The second I brought that in, I knew it was something special. With the Chinese market, you're never quite sure how special.

"As soon as it went online and people wanted to buy it out of auction, we realised we were on to something.

"We maxed out on the telephone lines. The online bidding was keeping pace, in £1,000 jumps.

"It's a great day for the vendor and a great day for us as an Island business. We're really proud."

Warren says more will only be known about the winning buyer or buyers when the data from the sale is processed, but he is certain is will be someone from China and thinks it is likely that the bowls will return to their original home country.

He said: "Those sort of things don't come by very often and they're very often faked. When you get the real deal, the market wakes up.

"When I pick the phone up to my client, it's going to change her life."

These are not the most expensive items he has sold, however. Memorably, Warren once auctioned a long case clock for an amazing £240,000 and an ornate Polynesian paddle, for £220,000.
