A FIRE which broke out at a derelict hotel in Ryde is being treated as suspected arson, police have confirmed.

Shortly before 7pm, firefighters were called to George Street — to the former Royal York Hotel.

Among them were four crews from Ryde, Sandown and Newport.

The fire was located on the first floor of Hanover House, which is on the site of the now defunct Royal York Hotel.

A spokesperson for the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said smoke and flames were seen issuing from the derelict building on arrival, and police assistance was requested to close the road.

The first-floor blaze was extinguished by crews using hose reels, jets and ventilation fans.

Crews returned to station following a stop message at 8.34pm.

"We were called by the fire service, reporting a fire at Hanover House," said a spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary.

"This is being treated as suspected arson, and enquiries remain ongoing. 

"Anyone with information that could assist our enquiries is asked to contact police on 101, quoting 44220313323."
