Prime Minister hopeful Liz Truss at Isle of Wight giant Union flag

She spoke to 200 party members at the Island Riding Centre, hoping to secure their votes, and visited Wight Shipyard in East Cowes. She arrived on the Island via Hovertravel hovercraft.

The Isle of Wight is the country's largest constituency and has a large Conservative majority.

Island MP Bob Seely has backed Ms Truss, and is accompanying her today.

Ms Truss also visited Wight Shipyard in East Cowes - the same business visited by Boris Johnson in 2019 when he was in the same position, vying to become Prime Minister.

As well as Wight Shipyard being one of the Island's business success stories, no doubt the huge iconic Union flag as a backdrop played a role in selecting the location for both visits.

It was during Mr Johnson's visit he pledged to consider Bob Seely's Island Deal - but the deal hasn't yet been forthcoming.

There's no word yet on whether Ms Truss will make a similar pledge.

Mr Seely told the County Press it was good to see so many younger members of the Conservative Party supporting Ms Truss today.

She fielded questions about the ferries and more support for the Isle of Wight Council.

At Wight Shipyard, she talked about support for British industries.

Peter Morton, Wight Shipyard CEO, told the County Press Ms Truss was very interested in supporting British industries.

Wight Shipyard is currently building two Thames Clippers and two yachts using the latest cutting edge aluminium technology.

Rishi Sunak is set to visit the Island tomorrow (Saturday).
