THE LURE of the Island's giant Union flag was too much for Prime Minister hopeful Liz Truss to resist.

Her visit to Wight Shipyard yesterday (Friday) gave the perfect opportunity to get a photo to pin at the top of her "Liz for Leader" Twitter page.

Ms Truss visited the Isle of Wight yesterday to meet with Conservative party members.

She spoke to them at the Island Riding Centre, just outside Newport, and then visited successful business Wight Shipyard in East Cowes - where the Union flag building sits on the waterfront.

Ms Truss was accompanied on her visit by Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely, who has backed her in the leadership race.

Ms Truss did not allow questions from local journalists, and there's no word on whether she will make a commitment to an 'Island Deal' to recognise the unique challenges of the Isle of Wight.

Conservative Isle of Wight Councillor Ian Ward said on his Facebook page: "Island Conservative Party members had the opportunity to listen to what plans Liz Truss was going to implement should she be elected as Party Leader and thus Prime Minister.

"I was pleased she said that she would reduce fuel and green taxes. Members asked her many questions about; the cost of living, planning policy, adult social care, education, ferries, the Island Deal, levelling up etc."

Today, other Prime Minster hopeful Rishi Sunak is set to visit the Island.
