NEWPORT'S Morrisons supermarket has been evacuated due to fears of a gas leak.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service has crews at the scene.
The supermarket, on South Street, was full of shoppers.
There was a possible build up of gas, so everyone has been evacuated as a precaution while an investigation is carried out.
The County Press understands approximately 900gms of refridgeration gas was released into the store after a unit was moved.
Fire crews are using propulsion fans to blow the gas through the store and out of the rear exits.
The store remains closed at this time.
More to follow.
A spokesperson from the fire service confirmed at 1.30pm: "Firefighters from Newport and Ryde were called after an alarm was sounding at a supermarket on South Street in Newport shortly after midday.
"With the store evacuated, crews investigated to find a small amount of refrigerator gas had leaked.
"HIWFRS ventilation fans were used to clear the store of gas before the stop message came in at 1.23pm."
As of 1.40pm, the shop was still closed.
