Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely says he is delighted Liz Truss is set to become the next Prime Minister.

After winning the Conservative leadership contest today, Liz supporter Bob, said he believes she will be good news for Islanders.

Bob told the County Press: “I am delighted that Liz Truss has won.

“I know she will immediately focus on the priorities facing our nation and the Island; the cost of living, inflation, the cost of energy driven by the Ukraine war, growing our economy and delivering public services.

“Liz visited the Island in the summer. We discussed what the Government had already delivered for Islanders and what needs to be done.

“Since I became MP, we’ve received tens of millions of additional investment in the Island. More than £48 million to upgrade hospital facilities for Islanders, £26 million to upgrade our trains, stations and track, £6 million for shipbuilding infrastructure in East Cowes and millions more for the Isle of Wight College and Ryde transport upgrade.

“We’ve also had our additional costs recognised and more money for the Council. I will always ensure that the Island continues to get a better deal by making sure the Island’s voice is heard with ministers.

“More generally, Liz understands the impact of rising costs on family budgets so she has promised to reverse the new National Insurance tax, saving the average worker £240 a year. She has also stressed the need to bring down the cost of childcare - very important for working parents.

“We will also bring in new laws to prevent hard-left unions bringing our transport system to a halt, by ensuring minimum service obligations when there are strikes - and I have made it clear to Liz that should include cross-Solent ferries too.

“Like me, Liz wants to protect our green fields and ensure that we can focus on building affordable housing for Islanders, so she will remove Whitehall-imposed, top-down housing targets.

“I will always continue to fight for the interests of Islanders and for the Island and always ensure that we continue to get a better deal.”
