A Dementia support group has been launched in St Helens, thanks to one Isle of Wight woman and her dedicated team of volunteers.
The bi-monthly event is run by Ruth Reeves, who lost her late husband to dementia five years ago.
Recognising there was a dearth of support for families affected by the syndrome in the area, Ruth wasted no time in securing a spot for her club at St Helens Community Centre.
“I found it so hard to take my husband out anywhere,” said the 79-year-old, who lives in Ryde.
“I still kick myself, putting him into care, but as I now say to people – you can’t cope on your own.
“No matter how much help you can get, it’s 24/7.
“I belong to the Alzheimer’s cafes, and I run a carers group, too, but I wanted to give something back for all the help I had.
“I thought, lets start it up here. I wanted to start another Alzheimer’s cafe originally, but it couldn’t be done, so I had the idea to launch a Dementia lunch club instead.
“There was nothing for Dementia in Seaview, Nettlestone, St Helens or Bembridge.
“That’s how it all started. We’ve been running the group since July, and we’ve been funded by The High Sheriff’s Office and Sovereign Housing.
“It’s been brilliant. The people who come here love it – absolutely love it.
“It’s a place for people with dementia, their carers and their families.
“We just have fun. It’s a real family atmosphere where people can share their experiences.
“They get to have a laugh and have a bit of a break.”
On December 7, all the visitors enjoyed a Christmas meal together, with volunteer Eleanor Hewitt running the kitchen.
Entertainment was provided by magisican, Stephen Hill.
So far, Ruth has 11 volunteers, but she’s always looking for more.
The group runs from 11.30am to 2.30pm on the first and third Wednesday of every month.
The only exception is in August, when the group runs on the first week only.
Anyone keen to come along and get involved should call Ruth on 617887 or 07773 440657.
