AN ISLE of Wight man caught drink and drug driving in Newport was banned from being behind the wheel for two years.

Bertram Bristow, of The Diggings, St Helens, had admitted drink and drug driving on Orchard Street, Newport, on October 1 last year, at an earlier appearance at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last month.

The 23-year-old had also appeared at the same venue three days' earlier to be sentenced for drink-driving on December 10 last year.

He received a 15-month driving ban and was fined £366.

Bristow's latest set of offences saw him get a concurrent 24-month disqualification.

After being arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving, a failed blood test for alcohol provided police with a reading of 88. The legal limit is 80.

After being tested for drugs, Bristow provided a Benzoylecgonine (BZE) — a cocaine derivative — reading in his blood of 393 ug. The limit is 50.

Bristow also provided a Delt-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, or cannabis, reading of 4.2 ug. The legal limit is 2.0.

For Bristow, Amy Hosell said at the sentencing hearing that her client lost his job as a result of his offending, but had recently found work again and was willing to work with the Probation Service.

He was handed a year-long order, which included 60 hours' unpaid work.

Bristow must pay £85 costs and a £34 surcharge.
