FIREFIGHTERS on the Isle of Wight were called to a fire at a flat on a Newport housing estate.

Crews from Newport and Cowes were called to flats on the corner of Beauchamp Drive and Godric Road, at Pan this afternoon (Sunday).

Residents in the flats were evacuated while firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using one hose reel tackled the fire.

The report came into the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue service at 2.23pm.

Although the fire was reportedly extinguished at 3.06pm, officers remain at the scene using positive pressure ventilation on the smoke-logged property.

More to follow.
