A WELL-KNOWN Isle of Wight woman celebrated her 100th birthday last week with a special presentation ceremony at the Yarmouth Harbour office.

Sydney Attrill, the wife of the late long-serving Yarmouth harbour master, Charles, was presented with a birthday card from King Charles III by the Island's Lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon, as part of her special day.

Charles was born in the town, with his family going back several generations. He was the boatman at the Royal Solent Yacht Club before becoming harbour master in 1958, until his retirement in 1982.

Sydney served with The Wrens during the second world war, where she worked as a typist based at Lee-on-Solent.

She is thought to be the last surviving person in Yarmouth who served during the war.

The presentation was organised by Chris Waddington and hosted by the current harbour master, Tim Adams.

Among those who attended Sydney’s special day were Kay Marriott, the Island’s High Sheriff, and John Caulcutt, who was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours.

Sydney’s birthday cake was created by Graces Bakery.
