"People told me to go to East Cowes so I went there and it's perfectly fine - they've even got a Waitrose!" — the creator of the hit YouTube series Turdtowns has revealed the places on the Isle of Wight he visited, which didn't make the final cut.

In an exclusive interview with the County Press, the man behind the viral video said he was expecting "World War Three" before he arrived, but instead found the Island, as a whole, to be "really nice".

He visited after subscribers to his channel voted the Island as the place he should review next in a poll.

The video, which has so far amassed 177,000 views, went viral after it labelled Sandown "embarrassing" and Wroxall a "weeping wart".

It also suggested Newport should be knocked down and Ryde made the capital.

The Turdtowns creator, who asked to be referred to as Towns to protect his identity, said he was "surprised" that most Islanders agreed with him.

"I thought people on the Island would be a bit more defensive", he said.

"The people all agreed that they had great memories of the place growing up but as a whole the Island isn't as quite good as it used to be.

"So, they agree it can still return to its former glory but it needs a bit spent on it at the moment."

Six towns feature on the list: Ventnor came sixth, Ryde fifth, Shanklin fourth, Wroxall third, Newport second and Sandown first.

But the cameras visited plenty of other towns which, thankfully, did not make the cut.

He said: "I always talk to some of the locals and ask ‘where would you say is the worst place on the Island?’

"One said Brading. It's a little bit scruffy but you can't throw it under the bus because it has one derelict building. It's not a reflection of the entire village.

"People also told me to go to East Cowes. I went there. Perfectly fine. I don't know what people are talking about. And there's a Waitrose there. You know things are going alright if there's a Waitrose.

"I saw there were loads of reports in the County Press of anti-social behaviour in Freshwater but it's a really nice place so I'm not including it."

Towns, 30, who lives "in the west country", said he visited the Island as a child but doesn't remember it.

"I also went there once when I was meeting a girl I met online", he said.

"That didn't go too well, we spent five minutes in Yarmouth and then I was back on the ferry!"

The other opinion, he said, was that of an old housemate who "swore blind" the Island was the roughest place in the world.

"There might have been the odd person who spat on the floor when I walked past, but [visiting the Island] was essentially a day off for me", he said.

His interest in neglected and obscure places first piqued as a child, when he read Crap Towns books in the car on UK family holidays.

Years later and he has turned his passion into a career.

"I know people are going to be looking at me saying 'I'm a full-time YouTuber and get a real job', but they don't know the back story and the struggle.

"I was working a full-time office job. I'd come home miserable and fed up and the money wasn't good enough."

He told the County Press the point of his channel isn't to offend - he's even reviewed his own town, although he's remaining tight-lipped over where that is.

He said: "I want to bring back humour into the world. This sort of humour was perfectly acceptable ten years ago. The world has become a bit devoid of humour. We used to be able to laugh at ourselves.

"I laughed at the town I live in. It's not a big deal to me.

"I hope that by shedding a light on places which are really bad it can help improve them."

So, would he come back to the Island and what's his prediction for the future?

"I would love to come back. To see if there is any impact from my videos, not saying it's all down to me, but that it might've drawn a bit more attention", he said.

"If I returned and it was looking better, I would definitely do a video saying how much better it looks.

"I highly expect Ventnor for example to become the next Sandbanks of the south! I see extreme potential in that place. I think that will be the next place to blow up."

Towns, apologetically, rates The Valleys, Wales as the worst place he's visited.

St Austell, Cornwall and Newport, Wales also feature.

"Newport in Wales was horrible. I'm sorry people of Newport", he said.

"Not Newport, Isle of Wight. That was fine!"

Turdtowns' next video is due to be uploaded on YouTube on Monday, May 22.
