As the dental crisis continues on the Isle of Wight, could a new practice in Ryde be the answer?
Plans have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council to transform the former youth and community centre, on Ryde High Street, into a dentist surgery.
The lack of appointments and availability of dentists has, in the last two years, become an issue for Islanders as some have struggled to be treated.
The problem has become so bad, evidence was given about the Island's current situation to a government enquiry earlier this month.
With the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board (ICB) now commissioning services, instead of nationally, it had been hoped one big dental practice would be able to alleviate some problems.
However, it was unable to recruit dentists to fulfil the contract so it is now looking to do something different.
The plans for the new dental practice on Ryde High Street have been submitted by Darko Iloski — currently a dentist with Bupa Dental Care in Ryde and the Sandown Dental Practice.
The practice in the heart of town could have 15 full-time employees, with nine clinical rooms, a reception area, sterilisation room, main office, staff and break room.
The large space is currently vacant but the lower ground floor is being used as a children's nursery and would remain so if the practice is approved.
A new floor could be created in the upper part of the former church to house five of the clinic spaces.
A platform lift is proposed to be installed, creating disabled access from the High Street.
The youth centre has been on the market multiple times since it closed.
Planning agents, Nova Architectural, on behalf of Dr Iloski, say the proposal would provide a much sought-after and needed facility which would have many over-arching benefits.
You can view the plans, 23/01020/FUL, on the council's planning portal. Comments can be made by July 21.
