Plans are afoot to move patients of Ryde's Argyll House GP surgery to other practices in, or as near to the town as possible, the Isle of Wight's MP has told the County Press.

Bob Seely said he has had an 'urgent conversation' with health officials over the closure of the surgery.

The GP practice, on Argyll Street, has issued a notice of closure to health bosses.

When the news was shared on the surgery's website last week, it prompted an outcry of concern from patients.

Mr Seely said: “I have been reassured that they, and doctors, are working on plans to transfer patients from Argyll House to other GP practices in, or as near as possible to, Ryde.

"I want to reassure people that no one will be left without a GP, and people in Ryde will be found another GP in Ryde."

Argyll House cares for thousands of patients in Ryde, Wootton Bridge and the surrounding villages and has been open for over 25 years.

Patients have been told they will be kept informed and to 'do nothing' at the moment.

The surgery remains open.

Mr Seely added: “I also want to reassure Islanders that I have asked health officials to provide, for the Island, an outline of how we will get more availability at GP surgeries, with doctors and other expert staff such as practice nurses and pharmacists, but also more NHS dentist availability too.

"For minor ailments, Islanders are encouraged to visit their local pharmacy for help and advice."

Meanwhile, the organisation that represents patients said it is deeply concerned and saddened.

Healthwatch IOW said: "We know clinicians from the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care System (ICS) are working hard to support patients.

"We have offered to support commissioners to hold public meetings or drop-in sessions, where patients can go to ask questions and learn about what their options are. We will inform the public of the details of these meetings as soon as they have been arranged."

Ryde, Appley and Elmfield councillor, Michael Lilley, said he is trying to find out the reasons behind the decision.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight ICB, which oversees GP surgeries, has refused requests for an interview.
