An Isle of Wight woman is taking on the Swim15 challenge this August to help spread awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer.

Elaine Turner, from Ryde, is taking on the challenge to swim 15 days in August to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK.

Elaine, 55, was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021, and when her symptoms first started, she did not think it could be anything serious.

Having gone through breast cancer five years ago, she assumed her stomach problems were due to her cancer medication or diet.

Through taking part in Swim15, Elaine hopes to spread awareness of the symptoms of bowel cancer and how easily they can be missed.

What is Bowel Cancer UK's Swim15 challenge?

The Swim15 fundraising event takes place in August and asks people to get sponsored to complete their own swimming challenge that incorporates the number 15.

Whether that’s 15 laps a day, swimming for 15 days or racking up 15km throughout the month, the funds raised will help stop people from dying of bowel cancer by raising awareness of the disease and funding vital services and lifesaving research.

Elaine said: “One day I ended up doubled over in pain and had to ring 111. I was diagnosed with inoperable bowel cancer that had spread to my lungs, liver and lymph nodes.

“They told me I only had two years left, but I passed that in May. I stay positive. My approach is that I can’t do anything about my cancer, so I’ve just got to get on with it.

“The sea is so beautiful here, clear and lovely. When you’re told you only have a little while left, you need to prioritise quality of life, and this is what makes me happy. So, when I saw Swim15 was a way to fundraise, all I could think was, yes, it’s perfect for me.

“For all those who have been diagnosed, I want you to know that it doesn’t mean it’s the end. Don’t think the worst, just have your treatment, and make the most of your life doing the things you love.”
