AFTER another successful weekend, it looks like the Isle of Wight Classic Car Extravaganza is here to stay.

Classic cars took over Ryde Esplanade at the weekend, in memory of the event's late founder, Vic Gallucci.

A much-loved member of the Island community, Vic died back in May, with well-known Islander and chair of the Newport Carnival Committee, Paddy McHugh, taking the helm.

Paddy says provisional dates have already been fixed for next year - September 7 and 8 - and confirmation is expected later this month.

The event saw vehicles from all over the UK and mainland Europe attend the two-day show.

A record number of cars are believed to have entered the event's 22nd year; some 500, including a Model T Ford, which is more than 100 years old.

The show raised money for both MAD-Aid and Mountbatten.

At 2pm, visitors gathered opposite the Harbour Office for a special memorial service to celebrate Vic's life.

Two large screens showed a montage of Vic's photos, as well as a recorded video from Graham Cole - PC Tony Stamp in the Bill - who was a close friend of Vic's.

Among the highlights were police cars, including a 2014 Dodge Charger, originally in service in Boston, a 2012 version which served Monroe Township New Jersey, and a 2014 Ford Explorer, which travelled all the way from Miami Beach.

Visitors also enjoyed an appearance from Starways Crossplay team and classic car expert and TV presenter Sarah Crabtree.

"Taking over the Isle of Wight Classic Car show is a huge honour, and such massive shoes to fill," said Paddy.

"Vic was so proud of his show, which he created more than 20 years ago, raising thousands of pounds for local charities.

"I aim to fill those shoes and make sure Vic's show grows year on year, and maybe with a few different features, but not a major restructure.

"It’s grown so much, but only down to Vic's determination.

"With the continuous support of Sue Hemmings from Wightlink, and from Grant Ford, who does a lot behind the scenes, I promise it will continue.

"As chairman of Newport Carnival, I also feel there may be a way to combine our events."
