A donkey from the Isle of Wight, who was left fighting for survival, is now 'stable' and recovering — thanks to the life-saving efforts of his fellow four-legged friends.

Theo, a rescued resident from the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary, in Wroxall, was in urgent need of blood transfusions following major operations.

On one occasion, efforts to save him saw fellow residents Leighton and Trevor quickly put on a ferry, alongside staff, to help their friend.

Theo arrived at the sanctuary a couple of weeks ago, with Noah. However, staff soon discovered he was extremely ill and had been diagnosed with colic.

Almost immediately, he was transported to Liphook Equine Hospital to undergo surgical treatment. His best friend, Noah accompanied him and has been at Theo’s side throughout his treatment.

Vets were able to see that Theo’s intestine had been severely damaged and around one foot of intestine had to be removed.

The following day, three of the sanctuary's young, strong geldings Major, Thomas and Eiffion donated blood and it was transported over to Liphook hospital.

It made a 'huge difference', staff said, but the next day Theo became less bright and he was going downhill pretty quickly.

Another operation was needed and it became apparent Theo needed to have part of his colon removed.

After another major operation, Theo was fighting for his life.

Another blood transfusion was needed and this time, donkeys Leighton and Trevor made their way over on a ferry with two selfless team members, Farm Manager, Chloe, and Estate Manager, Nick.

Trevor and Leighton gave blood the next morning.

The donkey sanctuary said: "The blood transfusion was a huge success and Theo quickly became brighter and over time was able to have short walks and even nibble some grass.

"His recovery is still in the early stages and he now has an infection in his leg that he is now fighting but we are hoping and wishing him well.

"It's huge thanks to our fantastic veterinary teams at Vectis Vets on the Island, Liphook Hospital, and our dedicated and selfless team at the IOW Donkey Sanctuary who have helped give Theo every hope of surviving."
