The back-of-the-Wight route is favourite among Islanders and visitors alike but it is increasingly precarious in places, as erosion eats away at our coastline.

A debate is ongoing about how to shore up the road - and whether that should even happen at all.

Isle of Wight Council Leader, Cllr Phil Jordan, said no plans are in place yet to secure the future of Military Road, but all possible options would be considered.

One section is metres away from the cliff edge and highways firm, Island Roads, said it could be under threat in seven years at the current rate of erosion.

On Tuesday, members of the Isle of Wight Council's planning committee turned down plans to stabilise the section between Brook and Hanover Point, in line with the officers' recommendation.

Planning committee members said work to drive foundations down 21 metres, for a 26 metre long wall, was likely to have had a significant adverse impact on the landscape and beauty and would have hit protected habitats, including an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Scientific Sites of Special Interest.

Island Roads said its plan would have been only a temporary measure until a long-term permanent solution can be agreed.
