WITH bad weather forecast for the weekend ahead, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council has cancelled this year’s Day of Christmas event.

The decision was made by the community council to pull the plug on this coming Saturday's event following advice from staff, who had been monitoring weather forecasts.

The community council's chairperson, Cllr Andrew Garratt, said: “We realise this will be very disappointing news. However, safety is always paramount.

"The forecast suggests strong winds and rain, which will make it difficult to run the event safely.

"The event will be back next year, bigger than ever and, hopefully, it will incorporate Newport Minster and The Quay, which have proven popular in the past.”

Skates will still be holding their free skating sessions for those who have pre-booked.

Although there will not be an official Christmas lights switch on this year, residents can expect the lights to come on during the evening of Saturday, November 18.

It is anticipated 64, High Street, in Newport, will host a Christmas-themed day that will feature a Santa's grotto and activities in the run-up to Christmas.
