A popular Isle of Wight dog walking spot has raised hundreds for a children's charity, all thanks to honest donations, following the introduction of a pay and display system.
The privately owned grassland behind Carisbrooke Castle is a favoured location for Island dog walkers, horse riders and kite flyers, and the recently installed honesty-driven pay and display system in its car park off Whitcombe Road has been a huge hit.
First installed in March, it initially received very few donations, with the signage tucked away in the corner.
The initiative has since become a roaring success after the landowners at nearby Frogland's Farm decided to move the sign and place a large, eye-catching buoy, repurposed as a donation point, in the middle of the car park back in August.
Car park users are asked to offer an 'honest donation', as little as 25p for two hours, with no obligation to comply, but visitors have rallied around the idea.
The car park raises money for Tearfund, a children’s charity which partners with churches in more than 50 churches in the world’s poorest countries, helping to tackle poverty and injustice through sustainable development.
The team at Frogland’s are passionate about the cause and has a history of supporting the charity.
The County Press visited the much-loved spot and spoke to dog walker Glyn Jenkins, who was out with his adorable three-year-old Schnauzer, Rusty.
Glyn praised the initiative, stating it was really popular with the site's many visitors, adding that the grassland is a great location to let your dog off the lead to play with other pups.
A spokesperson from Frogland’s Farm said a cheque for over £600 was recently sent to Tearfund, all thanks to honest and generous donations since August.
