Island police, called out to assist Island Roads in the clearance of a tree felled by strong winds on the B3399 Newport Road, Freshwater, this morning (Saturday), are urging motorists to take care on wet and flood-affected roads and to plan their journeys carefully.

On the Island police's Facebook page, they posted: "We are currently assisting Island Roads with a road closure on Newport Road (Middle Road) between Wilmingham Lane and Afton Road, due to a tree down across the road.

"Please be aware that due to all the rain, the majority of roads on the Island are flooded or extremely wet.

"Please adjust your speed and driving accordingly to the conditions.

"We've already seen some driving which is questionable, considering the roads are more like rivers.

"It may take you longer to get to your destination, so please allow extra time and set off earlier than you would normally."
