An Isle of Wight councillor has said he wants answers after flooding once again shut a main road between Sandown and Brading.

Cllr Ian Ward, councillor for Sandown South, said the recurring closures of Morton Common are becoming more frequent and he is trying to find out why.

As the County Press reported yesterday (Wednesday), the road was again closed by Island Roads due to high water levels.

Several causes of the flooding have been suggested, including frequent heavy rain in a short space of time and a lack of dredging of the River Yar, which runs alongside the road.

Cllr Ward has said no reasons have yet been confirmed.

He said: "This road has flooded in the past but not with the depth and frequency it does now.

"The flooding affects residents homes and the closure of the road causes huge disruption to residents.

"I have tried to find out why it happens and various different causes have been suggested, but none are confirmed.

"I have asked our MP to arrange a meeting with the Environment Agency so we can find out and then do something about it.

He added that Island Roads have confirmed to him all the drains along the road have been cleared.
