An alleged assault on the streets of Ryde, which left people injured and prompted staff at Wetherspoons to lock the pub's doors, is being investigated by police.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to reports of two males armed with a screwdriver and knife just after midnight on December 30.

It was reported that two men and a woman were approached by the two males, in the area of Union Street at 12.09am

There was a brief altercation causing minor injuries, officers said.

The group of three went inside a nearby pub to get away from the two males, who left the area.

As the County Press previously reported, fears they would enter S. Fowler & Co led to door staff at the pub locking doors with customers inside.

"Customers were allowed to leave if they wished but were warned about the lads outside", a spokesperson for JD Wetherspoon said.

The doors were locked for around 20 minutes.

Police have said the incident is under investigation.
