Multiple flood alerts and warnings issued for Isle of Wight

There is a flood warning in place for Lukely Brook, with Carisbrooke, Hunnyhill, and Newport Quay all affected.

In the last four hours, 22mm of rain has been recorded in Carisbrooke.

The property at the bottom of Castle Street will flood from rising water levels and surface water flowing down the road, said the Environment Agency.

The Aquatics Centre at Vicarage Walk, near Foxes Lane, will also flood.

Water levels will be very high at Caesars Road and Old Westminster Lane, and the river could burst its banks, flooding roads and parked cars.

Most of the rain has cleared the area, and water levels will begin to fall by 8pm.

This flood warning will be updated by the Environment Agency by 11am tomorrow (Friday, January 5).

A flood alert remains in place for the Eastern Yar and tributaries between Whitwell and Bembridge, and an update is expected by 3pm tomorrow, or sooner if required.

A further flood warning has been issued for Monktonmead Brook at St John’s Road in Ryde, with water levels high and still rising.

Heavy and intense rain has fallen, with 20mm in four hours recorded in Ryde.

At 5pm this evening, water began flowing across the railway tracks, upstream of St John’s Station.

Flooding of the station buildings or nearby properties is not expected, said the Environment Agency, which advises residents to move vehicles from depots next to the river and railway line.

The river is expected to peak by 9pm.

Another Monktonmead update will be released by 3pm tomorrow.

Environment Agency contractors are out in the areas, trying to keep the rivers free of blockages.

Sandbags can be found on Well Road in East Cowes, Simeon Street Recreation Ground in Ryde and St Mary’s Car Park in Cowes.
