AN UNEMPLOYED teenager who stole projectors from an Isle of Wight supermarket, told police she wanted them, but did not have the funds to pay for them.

Emma Knight, 19, of Hunnyhill, Newport, admitted shoplifting, namely electrical goods to the value of £204, on March 30 last year.

Knight was caught removing two projectors and their cables, from their boxes, and put them into a bag, before she left B&M stores in Newport without paying.

When arrested, jobless Knight told the police she wanted the items, but did not have the money to pay for them, said Lauren Stone, prosecuting, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

She later sold one of the projectors to a friend because she did not like it.

Knight, with no previous convictions, was given a conditional caution by the police, but failed to comply with it by not turning up for a police programme in Cosham and was subsequently charged with shoplifting.

Knight has kept out of trouble since the offence, said her solicitor, Henry Farley.

Magistrates handed Knight a compensation order for the £204, with no order for costs due to her means.
