'Unsafe' traffic queues outside the Isle of Wight's waste and recycling centres have led to the council issuing advice for Islanders.

The local authority is urging residents not to arrive too early for bookings, to prevent a build up of traffic on the main roads.

For the second weekend running, there have been long queues at the tips, especially at Lynnbottom.

It has been causing further delays down the road, making it both unsafe for other road users and added to delays in accessing the sites, the council has said.

Cllr Lora Peacey-Wilcox, cabinet member for waste management, said: “We know this time of year is busy as people take advantage of the spring weather and particularly the Easter bank holiday to tackle a spring clean.

"This also coincides with the tourist season beginning in earnest on the Island so our roads are also becoming busier. I would urge residents to stick to the times they have booked and to not arrive too early, please.”

Natasha Dix, service director for waste, environment and planning, added: “Please stick to the time you have booked. If you don’t have a booking, you won’t be able to enter the site.

“We advise arriving no sooner than ten minutes before your allotted time.

"The tips are also quieter from 3pm onwards so you have the option of booking at a quieter time if you wish, especially since the introduction of same day booking last autumn.”
