A pensioner has been rescued from the rocks at an Isle of Wight fort following a multi-agency response this evening (Monday, April 8).

Emergency teams were called at 5.42pm to reports that a man had become stuck on an unstable surface at Fort Albert near Colwell Bay.

Crews from HM Coastguard and the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS), including engines from Newport and Ryde, were sent to the scene to rescue the man.

The 73-year-old was suffering from hypothermia and was in shock, a HIWFRS service spokesperson said.

Emergency teams used dry suits and the coastguard rescue sled to rescue the man.

He was transferred to Yarmouth Harbour by RNLI lifeboat and is now in the care of the IW Ambulance Service.

Rescue crews were stood down shortly before 7.30pm.
