Planning permission for a new Isle of Wight skatepark in Freshwater has been officially granted, following strong community support.

Plans for the new Freshwater Skatepark have been in the works since 2021 after it was determined that the old Moa Place skatepark was coming to the end of its life.

Designed by Gravity Skateparks, the new concrete skatepark and the tarmacked pump track would be the first of its kind on the Island and will have a range of obstacles and elements.

Freshwater Parish Council (FPC) requested planning permission in September 2023 and announced that yesterday (Monday, June 10), the IW Council granted the proposal.

A spokesperson for the parish council said: “This marks a significant milestone for our community and brings us one step closer to providing a fantastic new facility and community space for people of all ages.

“We would like to express a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved.

“This accomplishment would not have been possible without the unwavering support and dedication of numerous individuals and organisations.

“We extend our deepest gratitude. Your voices and support have been instrumental in bringing this project to life.

“We will maintain active engagement with local residents to ensure that the skatepark project advances in a manner that benefits the entire community.”

The Parish Council will now focus on fundraising efforts to raise the £120,000 needed to bring the skatepark to life.

Fundraising events have been taking place, including a music and movie fundraiser in March and a line of merch clothing through Teemill.

The Parish Council is also looking for businesses and individuals who are interested in supporting the skatepark through sponsorship.

“Every contribution, big or small, brings us closer to our goal,” the spokesperson added.

“Your support is vital to the success of this project. Together, we can create a state-of-the-art skatepark that will serve as a hub for recreation, creativity, and community spirit.”
