MAJOR work to replace a damaged sewer at The Graben in Ventnor will result in a road closure put in place for the two weeks — and a long diversion to and from the town.

Southern Water's teams will be working on Newport Road (B3327) in Ventnor, starting from  today (Monday).

The company's Isle of Wight customer manager, Adam Wilds, said: “We know how disruptive works like these are — especially during the busy summer season.

"We have been working closely with the Isle of Wight Council, to make sure we minimise the impact of these works on residents, businesses and commuters, and ensure they are well planned out.

"We’re sorry for any disruption and inconvenience caused in Ventnor and the wider area, but for safety reasons, it is essential this work is carried out."

What will the works do?

Southern Water has detected signs the damaged sewer is causing a sinkhole to develop, which is why it is so important it is addressed now to prevent future issues.

Due to Leeson Road currently closed, following a major landslide in the area last December, a significant diversion route will be put in place.

Motorists will enter Ventnor through Whitwell, via a one-way system.

To exit Ventnor, you will need to drive via Chale.

The works are scheduled to finish on July 8.
