A RECORD 200 swimmers will compete in the iconic Pier2Pier sea swim on the Isle of Wight on Saturday (July 20).
Organised by the Isle of Wight Marlins Swim Club, this year's event marks the 70th anniversary of the race, which has attracted significant widespread interest.
"Sea swimming is becoming ever more popular all over the UK and this year’s Pier2Pier swim reflects this surge in interest," stated the club.
Half of the participants are Island residents, training vigorously in pools and off-Island beaches for the much-anticipated event.
Participants will begin the swim at 12 noon from Sandown Beach, adjacent to Sandown Pier —finishing the 1.8-mile course at the Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club.
Spectators can expect swimmers to start arriving at the finish line from around 12.30pm.
"Numerous volunteers and local organisations are strongly supporting the event," the club added.
"Special thanks were given to the Sandown Shanklin Independent Lifeboat, Ryde Inshore Lifeboat, Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club, Ryde Beach Lifeguards, Shanklin Deep Sea Fishing Club, and a host of volunteer kayakers for their time and expertise.
"The swim has been run by the Isle of Wight Marlins Swim Club for over 20 years, providing a friendly space for those aged over 18 seeking fitness, fun, and competitive swimming opportunities.
"As part of the 70th celebration, Marlins is sharing fun stories and history on their Facebook page, embracing the rich past that the Pier2Pier race holds."
