More than 250 homes and businesses in and around Bembridge, St Helens and Sandown are without power this morning (Wednesday), following a major outage.

Postcodes in the PO35 and PO36 area are affected, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) has said.

A total of 142 postcodes have been hit, affecting 252 homes and businesses.

It is the first of two power cuts to hit the Isle of Wight today.

The unplanned fault was first reported at 6.38am this morning.

An SSEN spokesperson said: "Our engineers are in your local area and working hard to get your power restored as soon as possible.

"At this stage, based on initial investigations, we're aiming to restore your power by 10.30am.

"The cause of this power cut is a fault on our overhead network. This is the most common type of fault we see, and our teams are very experienced in dealing with these issues. In most cases, our engineers are able to get your power back on by simply replacing a fuse at the local substation, however, if the fault is severe, this may take us longer to fix. If this does happen, we will let you know."

Power appears to have been restored to the majority of homes and businesses in Bembridge in Sandown.

However, a power cut is still affecting St Helens.

A total of 1,618 addresses are now affected, SSEN has said.

The number has now reduced to 570. 

SSEN hopes to have power restored by 4pm.

Update 4pm

The outage is affecting just five customers in the PO34 5BU post code area.
