A project to create a 'vibrant' outdoor space for young people at the Isle of Wight's hospital has been completed.

The children’s ward garden at St Mary’s Hospital has officially reopened after undergoing a renovation.

The garden was originally refurbished in 2009 in memory of James Sparks, a patient who died on the ward.

With the help of partners, IW NHS Youth Forum set about designing a quiet space where young people could relax, socialise with others and have fun and play games.

Abigail Metcalfe, IW NHS Youth Forum chair said: “We couldn’t be happier with how the space turned out and feel privileged to have played such a big part in a project that we hope will bring laughter, joy, relaxation and calm to all those on the children’s ward for many years to come.”

The IW Rotary raised an incredible £10,000 for the project, allowing new decking to be installed to improve accessibility for people with disabilities.

Rob Adams, assistant district governor for the IW Rotary said: “This newly transformed garden will offer patients a pleasant outdoor space that they can enjoy at any time.”

The project was also part of national charity Artswork's Young Cultural Changemakers programme on the IW, funded by the government through Arts Council England.

Thanks to funding of £15,000 and artist Laura Hathaway, the garden now has nature inspired artwork on the walls, planting in moveable planters, comfortable seating, a willow wigwam, bird boxes and a growing wall.

There is also an area dedicated to James' memory, with a QR code leading visitors to his story.

Peta Rainford, Artswork placemaking creative producer for the IW said: “I’m incredibly proud of this project as it was led by young people and achieved fantastic results.”

Laura Hathaway, IW artist, said: "It was such a pleasure to work with and facilitate the ideas of the incredible young people from the NHS Youth Forum on this project.

"From the very start, their enthusiasm and creativity shone through."

Becky Hepworth, children’s ward matron said: “We now have a garden that is being used every day by patients on the ward and it is making a real difference to their stay."
